Learning
Support Materials
Many stories on this site
will appeal to primary school students requiring learning support, as well
as ESL students. They are lively, beautifully illustrated and – most
important - short.
It is advisable to review
stories before working with individual students or groups. There are 3
levels of difficulty. For obvious reasons, learning support material is
only provided for the first two levels.
The exercises are varied
and aim to test comprehension as well as develop language skills. They
include cloze passages, sequencing, multiple choice questions, rhyming and
short writing exercises based on the illustrations. If necessary, students
should be encouraged to re-read the stories in order to answer the
questions.
It is suggested that a
"story review" notice board be developed as a means of sharing
the stories and stimulating interest. Student reviews could include title,
genre, brief resume, a picture (preferably coloured) with caption and a
rating by the reader.
